Here's what we did. Sanded the surface of the table just enough to knock down the glossy finish. One coat of Kilz primer was applied. The table top was given 2 coats of Linen White and the base was done in Benjamin Moore Big Bend Beige (a grayish beige).
Then I hit the edges with my palm sander. Love this part!!
Finally, I brushed on a mixture of Dark Walnut stain and glaze and wiped it off with my rag.
Gives it that nice antique look and even picks up on the nicks and scratches that were in the table. You really can't mess up a finish like this. It's the perfect finish for kids too.

love this table! I'm looking for some ideas to redo my kitchen table and this is my favorite so far. What aprox. quantities did you use to mix your stain and glaze? I love to antique with stain and have had better luck then with tinted glazes. I would love to try this technique, it might be the perfect answer.
Fabulous job.. you're getting good at this! Do you find the walnut stain to be black? Or more dark brown? I have an identical oak table, and I want it all black -- Have you painted a black table before? I was thinking of painting the top rather than a stain as its hard to find a black stain.

The walnut stain is more brown than black. I have never painted black myself. Good luck with your table!

Tammy, I used a 50/50 mix of stain and glaze. You have to whisk it good for it to blend together, but I like the way it worked. I normally use paint and glaze, but thought I would give this a try.
